beckoning
I
You took her like a shooting star
that left an ashen trail.
The dinning phone that bore
the news exploded in my brain.
I staggered
through those sterile corridors.
Mum.
I cannot see the shore.
The horizon recedes
from me. Albatross cries drift
across waves lapping my salt-seared
skin. Arms numb I clutch
the flotsam of my memories.
II
You have pledged to keep the deep sea
treasures of our hearts.
Then we may love with hearts
resting
in you, O God,
gentled by your peace.
Held by your faithfulness we tread
the path ahead wending
into the distance.
Butterfly-delicate, unseen flutters
on the periphery of seen—
and the chasm of death glowers
before eternity beckoning,
glowing from afar.
