I met up with her in Walmart’s. She is a tiny
old lady. I know she is a real angel.
As silly as that sounds, I knew it when she first
took my hand in hers when we were looking
at flowering plants. She said, look at us,
both loving God’s creations. I don’t hate you,
and you don’t hate me. Look at us.
We looked at each other with tears in our eyes.
I loved her then, and every time
I remember that day.
Imagine if that moment was caught on the news.
A middle-aged white woman and an old black angel
falling in love with each other and with God
while considering the lilies of the valley together.
